Inactive CD function

ive got a single CD player in my 2004 5 series whichy somehow can not be used, i mean a CD gets in, nothing happenes , i try to turn it on using idrive, where in entertainment submenu there are three tabs: AM, FM and CD, the first two can be pressed but the CD one is blank.
Anybody knows where the problem is?
