I6 better than V8?? No way. V8s rule......er; unless you have a V10...

I didn't say "better", I said "I prefer inline 6". There is a number of reasons. Much like there are many criteria by which you can call an engine "good" or "better", and not all have to do with simple power output. For instance, my I6 is rated at 255 for 3.0 litter engine - that's 85hp per liter of displacement. Your 550 has a rating of 360hp from a 4.8L displacement - 75hp per liter of displacement. And that's considering that my I6 is 3 years older than your V8.

You may also want to consider the weight, fuel consumption and torque - particularly, torque's availability in the peak of the powerband in each gear. So while, of course, there's absolutely no doubt that your 550 is faster and quicker than my 530, my 530 is a LOT more efficient, has more bang for the buck - both on fuel consumption and vehicle price. Next you may also want to look into long-term reliability to determine what engine is "better" - I think I don't have to go into too much detail to remind you of the issues with BMW's V8s.

So V8s may rule, but to me - and IMHO objectively - I6 is the better engine of the two.

so HA!

You can't argue with the V8 guys. How do you know there is a god, because he just "is." Why is a V8 better, because it just "is."
With the new F10, all will be right again in 5 Series world and the V8 guys can comfortably rest. They have had a hard time since 2008 with the pesky 535.

There's no debate.

It is true that there is no replacement for displacement.

And it is just as true (if not true... errrr... er?) that smaller engines are more efficient.

You can have this debate with yourself and by yourself

It's a great performer, no doubt - but it has no business whatsoever displaying the M badge. I may be in a minority here, but for me at least just being fast isn't enough to merit a place in BMW's M lineup.

The E60 M5 and current M6 are the highwater mark for the M brand and the traditional M brand values - we'll probably never see their like again. And that, my friends, is nothing short a tragedy.

yeah, 5400lbs of joy, thats an M!

gross monstrosity, completely useless and denegrates the entire M brand as nothing more than a \\\Marketing scheme...a true tragedy of Shakespearean proportions

A turbo is displacement replacement, nothing lke an engine thats scalable with a software download.
