ignition has trouble firing up
#1
Not sure if it is due to the cold weather but when I press my Start button for ignition, the car seems to have trouble firing up. Today after not driving my car for a week, I press the START button for the first time and it didn't. It fired up the second time I pressed it. My car as 11K miles on it. Anyone know what's going on that can help? Thanks

You just need to give it a couple of good run's,the recent cold weather coupled with you not using your car have run down the battery, mine was doing the same.

Is the starter not engaging at all or is it just taking several seconds to crank the engine?
Could be an HPFP issue

The starter engages. it just takes a like half a second to a second more sometimes when i first start the car in the morning time. i hope it is not an HPFP issue. Thanks for all the responses. if anyone else has any info on this, it would be very helpful.
*edit: i don't get any error messages at all

i had the same issue before. i didnt drive it alot a last winter so the car basically sat for weeks at a time. the start-up got worse, and error messages finally started popping up. at first i thought it was the starter but actually just ended up needing a new battery. in your case, your battery is probably still okay since the car is not that old. it has to be the cold weather and the car sitting over the past week. the cca's (cold cranking amps) in the battery probably fell a little. just go for a quick drive, about 5-10 miles, on the highway so your alternator charges it back up. should be okay.

If you haven't driven the car in a week, then that is most likely your problem. over time, pressure within the fuel system bleeds down and has to build back up to prime the system. That is why when you turn the key, the fuel pump actually activates for a couple of seconds to prime the fuel system. after it fires up, drive it for a few miles to clear out any deposits that may have formed within the fuel system

535 or the n54 engine to be exact, has been known for it's high pressure flow pump problems. the long cranks or pauses upon start up are the beginning symptoms of a faulty hpfp. eventually your steering wheels will begin to shake and the engine will sputter on start up. the engine will often misfire, you will get limp codes (engine malfuntion), and you might have to push the start button several times to get the engine to start. take your vehicle in to the dealership immediately for service. if you have to take the car in more than three times in for similar issues, you will qualify for the lemon law. that's exactly what happened to my '08 535i last year.
