Hello folks,

I have a 06 530xi (67k) and had to replace one of the ignition coils recently that misfired.

(Could have replaced all six but this was urgent and I couldn't shop around for a good price; was forced to buy one for $65!)

I intend replacing the remaining coils and thought of replacing the spark plugs also when I am doing it.

Would greatly appreciate some suggestions on the same:

- should I stick with the OEM coil and spark plugs?

- if you have recommendations, can you provide the part #s and link please?

Yes, I'd recommend you to stick to the OEM coils and plugs.

I saw a few on amazon yesterday and haven't got around double checking the OEM part #s yet. Plan to purchase in a few weeks and so have some time.

Edit - for plugs, realOEM has 12122158253 as the ongoing (ie not discontinued) part # for but doesn't mention the manufacturer.



Trinity - thanks for the affirmation and the iridium reco. May I know why NGK iridium and not Bosch?

NGK Iridiums are OEM on SOME e60's, but I think they are better than Bosch because it'll last longer and its stronger than platinum. Also it can withstand high temps. I use NGK Iridiums on all my customer cars and our own cars

 

Just had service and they replaced the plugs. My papers state the plugs were:

"12-12-0-037-244 SPARK PLUG, HIGH POWER: 121031"

I also had to go back because one of the plugs was bad and had a short.

 

Does anyone know how to test a BMW ignition coil for one of these cars?

 

Based on what my trusted mechanic friend (who also works @ a BMW dealership) did, it looks you do need to hook up the car and run the tests to determine which one is having an issue. It took about 30 minutes and he showed me the results - numbers of the coil in position 4 were far far higher than the other positions. He switched the coils between #4 and #1 and ran the tests to double-check; sure enough, now #1's results were out significantly erratic.

I am sure more experienced members can chime in on alternate methods.
