Everything is possible.
If you have the right equipment. But the equipment is waaaaay too expensive, so the usual E60 driver can'T do it at home.
And even if I could, I wouldn't do it myself for several reasons.

Exactly what they do.

With a big help from IP sub-contractors and some Intel chips...

Update CIP or Progman can be done at home for less a few hundred dollars by buying adapter from some vendor, and update through BMW TIS. It might not difficult to do, but you have to enter your VIN number to the system. The catch is you submit VIN to BMW center in New Jersey (BMW NA headquarter).
If something is wrong during software update and you cannot fix it, chances are warranty would be voided. Update sw at dealer would cost 1/2 hr to 1hr labor, so why risk?

1/2 an hr eh... the BMW garage here has come interesting angles.

Bought the car and asked them to do it for free whilst they valet and prep it (Should be free as they're already working on the car???)

Asked on the costs and they quoted 2 hrs labour (that was yesterday)

Asked someone else 10 minutes ago.... 2 days!!!!

oh well... lets try another BMW garage. Any recommendations in the UK (Birmingham)

The labour may be two or so hours but the elapsed time is often overnight because some modules fail and need to be restarted.

If i remember right it's Java, in that case, Sun, not MS.

Windows CE is in the 7-series.
