Since I've been out of maintenance, I've taken my '05 545i to my local mechanic shop for an oil change. They screwed up all the maintenance schedule and reset all everything to max intervals. Now both front and rear brake pad say -9000 and -15000. I've tried resetting it myself in the service menu but no luck. It just goes from -9000 to ----- and then blank.

First question: How do I reset the iDrive? I've searched the forums here and found the instructions to the service menu but the brake pad warning still remains.

Second question: They said the pads to look a bit worn. And in talking to them, they said the pads AND rotors had to be replaced at the same time due to "that's how BMW, Volvo and MB work." I have never heard of this and it smells like BS.

To answer your second question, you don't always need to replace the rotors when you replace the pads. It just depends on the wear on the rotors and the type of pads. For instance, ceramic pads wear the rotors more quickly. With that said, if you're nearing 75-100K miles on your car and are on your second set of brake pads, replacing your rotors is probably recommended.

As you your first question, I don't understand it. The maintenance intervals are default nmumbers set by the computer although certain maintenace warnings are also influenced by time and driving style.

if your pads are worn down and the pad sensor touches the rotor, you cant just reset it. you have to replace the sensors.

This is correct - must replace the sensors before you can do a successful brake mileage reset.

Something had to have triggered the sensors to go off because before I took the car in, the brake pad warning were not there. Then after the oil change, both front and rear warnings appeared.
