An iDrive question .... If I turn my display off I still get a grey screen at night due to the backlight. The old E39/E46 nav screen used to go off completely if you wanted it off I believe. The grey light is a bit of a distraction!
Does everybody have this - or does the back-light go off in some CIP versions? Thanks

Sadly true.
In situations where I want it as low as possible - night driving and no street lamps, I try and counter this as best I can by keeping my brightness permanently at -2 clicks in i-drive settings, then having the dash mounted thumb wheel close to minimum brightness.
I find this keeps my eye strain to an absolute minimum.

Due to a problem with the screen mine is currently off totally. Idrive is still working but the screen itself has gone. I should take a picture just to show you guys what its like at night.
Ill tell you what tho.. i miss it like mad and even something as simple as listening to the radio means ejecting the cd from the slot so it reverts.
Ill take a pic in a minute when I go collect a chinese..

well I guess we are missing to turn off the screen function here. Therefore only the gray overlay. Since I doubt you could shut the Idrive computer as a whole off during driving with no side effects..... I guess this is because everything in the E60 is so intergrated into each other, one piece of electronics can't function without the other
but if you use a hammer and slightly knock down on the Idrive screen it will go blank I'm sure don't know how to turn it back on

Bad use of terminology. It is "blank screen." Not turn off display. Display does not turn off unless the car is off. Remember Knight Rider. Kitt never turns off during driving. He's also never off unless the battery is unplugged. Even then, he as a backup power source. To bad, e60 don't have backup power.
