Just had the dealer replace the idrive / nav screen under warranty.
Appears I have the new screen - it's faster, the graphics are crisper, there's more help functions, and you can do "go to previous screen" by flicking the knob left.

I am still figuring out...

It's a fantastic interface. Love it so far.

Is not the screen that provides the new graphics, but software (PRROGMAN) update. Anyhow, enjoy...

Can 05 cars have this updated software without changing the hardware? How do you find out your software level??

you are able to get a software update via your BMW service department, should not need a hardware change...

paying for it or not is usually the deciding factor of upgrading software or not...

How much is it typically to upgrade software?

Honestly could not tell as I do not know. I have read various threads mentioning $189-$300. Hopefully other members will chime in, you could try using the search bar to help. GL

Also a software upgrade can take as long as an overnight stay at the service department as well.....

2 other things I noticed:

1. The "I accept" legal disclaimer disappears automatically after a few seconds.
2. The bluetooth connection with my phone takes about a 1/2 a minute longer than it used to...:-(

That's true as the other members mentioned, this is a software update that any E60 can get from their local BMW dealer. I have a 2004 and got all the features that you are mentioning.
