Can you please provide comments on how accurate you feel idrive reports mileage to service? Case in point: I am having a local indy shop help me clean up and paint my calipers. He called me up today to say hey man, you could benefit from a brake job sooner rather than later. idrive shows 18k on the rears and 25k on the fronts!?!?!?! He said I have only 2-3mm on most of the pads. I looked at them, and yes they do look thin, but I don't know which to believe. I have heard a little grinding coming from the front driver side, but I cleared that up with some hard braking.

I am also taking into account the guy probably wants to upsell a little, and he did give me a great price overall, but it's still way more than i anticipated paying at this time. Thanks for your input.

It happens to me too, although not as drastically as your scenario. My front pads were less than 2 mm last time I took it to the dealer, they were reluctant to change them because the iDrive still showed 5k miles to service. They changed them anyway out of courtesy (they didn't, however, completely tighten my front lugnuts as I found out this weekend when I painted my calipers but that's a different issue). The iDrive is far from accurate.

I just spoke with my SA (whom I trust and have worked with for years) and he said with some authority that he has only seen one or two cases ever where idrive reported the mileage to service incorrectly. So I will trust it is reporting correctly, and quit freaking out that I need a new brake job.

Hope this helps others in some way.

Yeah iDrive is just guess-timate ... physical inspection especially from trusted mechanic is much better ...

Really? Then what is the point of sensors!?! Ugh, now I'm confused and freaking out again. The mechanic I am using is new, so I really have no basis to judge him either way yet.

If you have the maint warranty then go to the dealer and have them inspect the brakes, if they are truly under spec they shouldn't have any trouble replacing them for you. Good luck

My SA swears by the iDrive information, but I too, am reluctant to believe it sometimes.

thanks for all the replies

i went and looked at this myself, and my mechanic showed me 2mm left on my rear pads, and between 2-3mm on the fronts

this is insane that idrive would say 18-20k miles left

i do not have extended maint, so it's either no brake job or brake job in 2-3k miles

i am undecided on what to do

was quoted $816 for all new pads, rotors, and install

Why do you think you need new rotors? Have they been worn down or turned already? Warped?
