Default iDrive Knob/Controller not selecting or Scrolling Correctly

Hello All!

I recently (Yesterday ) Purchased a 2006 525i and found out that it was having trouble with the selection knob. It randomly selects some items at times and others it won't select at all. Bottom line, its not acting as it should. I am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and if its a diy fix or a pricey stealership fix? The knob itself recognizes options (It provides resistance at the right times) but selecting, scrolling and sometimes even the broad directions of left right up down don't work. I look forward to any feedback and I apologize if this has already been posted but I did a search and it returned over 1000 pages of results. Hope you're having a great weekend and I am happy to join such an awesome community!

Mine is laggy from time to time. I does not respond as quick as it should sometimes. Especially when its cold outside. I got a 2006 525ix. I just learned to deal with it. In my eyes its "old technology".

Like any other "mouse" type interface, the mechanics eventually wear out; or if the previous owner "punched" it enough.. They can be replaced. See RealOEM.com Online BMW Parts Catalog, and search for the PN. Here's one from ECS: Search SiteSearch Idrive - 65829334611 - IDrive Control Unit - ES#2767601

@Banglenot Thank you for the reply! Have you found that this is a complicated replace or do you think that someone with a weekend and a can do attitude could know out? Thanks!

The system needs a minute or so to boot up when started- like a slow computer. Just FYI.

I pulled the knob off and sprayed compressed air around the control module. I've heard/read on other forums that this worked for others and it worked great in my case!
