I`m getting "dvd read error" in the iDrive display when trying to load a Navteq 2009.1 dvd. Is this a problem with old iDrive fimware ? I have a 2005 530 DAT.

I've heard rumours of the old firmwares having trouble with double layer DVDs (or maybe it's unrelated to DL but anyhow the old firmwares may be troublesome with the 2009 maps). Maybe someone can confirm this.

This could well be the case because on the older MK4 systems there was a new OS version simply to enable the DL reading capability of the drives. So it could be that some old PROGMAN versions are having the issues.

I have a dvd with Bmw road map version 06-2 working perfect, but outdated....
The 2009 dvd is not scratched, so I think I have to upgrade my car firmware next oil service.

If the former, Navteq and or BMW might replace it. Since the older DVD works what you have determined is that your car's DVD reader in the Nav system is functioning. I don't believe a s/w update (while always nice to be up to date) will be the solution. But then, I could be wrong ... every now and then I am.

I learned from another swedish BMW forum that Navteq Dvd Road map pro from 2008-2 and newer require a update of the Idrive firmware to read dual layer dvd`s. So I have to spend a lot of euros for firmware updates to get updated maps for my Navigation Pro.. Nice BMW! ![Doh](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/doh.gif)

You must have a very old iDrive firmware (CIP / PROGMAN) because when I bought the 2009-1 disc it worked without a problem. I think BMW should cover the cost of a CIP upgrade for you FREE of charge because its madness that you pay to buy their disc and then you pay again to update your software to read that disc. They should not have put that limitations on the drives in the first place.
P.S. The NA 2009-1 disc is still single layer whereas the EU 2009-1 disc is now dual layer.

Is the firmware update requirement specific to European models or across the board (or pond)?
