I have a 2004 530i, no navigation. I've had no iDrive problems but recently drove a friend's new '05 545 and his controller worked differently. At the end of each submenu, i.e. when I finished scrolling to the end of a list, the controller would physically stop, like a radio knob turned at the end of the dial. My controller doesn't do this. Is this something new or is mine broken??

Could it be that you were experiencing the force feedback controller that comes with a navigation system?

I have an '05 545 sport without Nav, yet the i-drive still has force feedback on it. I don't know if the '04 is supposed to have the force feedback or not.

I believe force feedback is standard on all 545's since MY04 with or without NAV.

I have an 05 545i w/Nav & Sirius. It has force feedback that varies with the menus selected. On the Sat menu you can scroll about 10 stations before you meet resistance. When you turn past this it feels like you are stripping gears on a transmission to get to more choices. Takes some getting used to!

Hmmm...my 05 530 doesn't seem to have force feedback, sounds interesting.

Thanks for the replies to my very first post. It's clear my car does not have the force feedback feature. I'm not certain which one I prefer.
