Yes you are right. It's the temperature. The idrive actually heats up the screen.

Take a look at the idrive doc. floating around here.

Yes indeed. I felt it normal, just wanted to hear some confirmation, so I can sleep well at nights.

@Stranger: Can you give me a link to that floating document?

I got it from Rudy but anyway I attach it here. It doesn't say much but look at page3 paragraph 2. That should let you sleep well at night.

I did some test for reaction time for light. U can too. Take the flashlight in the glove box and shine into the light sensor on iDrive (center, bottom of display). Will get its brighest possible for your settings in a second or two. Take light away and it is quite a delay until it backs off to more appropriate level for real ambient light condition. Makes sense as you do not want it reacting real fast to changing lighting conditions and giving you a flickering action. Probably described in that document if I would read it

Happens to me also (and we get cold up here!) ... I happy to see this is normal and it does get brighter as the car warms up

When I had my car at the airport theother night (~ 5 F), the display was very dark, almost unlegible. It took ~ 10 min to go back to normal brightness.

My iDrive screen on cold mornings seem to be quite dark. The contrast and brightness are not at normal setting. After I drive few minutes it starts to get back to normal contrast and brightness. Anyone notice this?
Yes!

It's been about -10 C all week overhere and I have noticed the same feature.

I think it's great that the tech does take care of this automatically, so that the screen don't break.

I would not start any TV, DVD or PC out from the cold before it has warmed up!

It is just one more quality feature that BMW stands for
