Well the facelift is slated to give us all the buttons to complement the iDrive we'll ever need!
As for direct input I use extended voice input quite a bit - it works well for me.

Are you happy/satisfied with iDrive? Is it worth it?
So from a E60 point of view one can only ask, how all the funtions could be otherwise handled?
The new facelifted E60 (spring -07) will get the same iDrive functions as the new E70 (X5):
8 preadjusted funtions behind buttoms. This should help those with loaded cars...

I understood the buttons were "programmable" rather than "preadjusted".

except for having to adjust some climate functions in the idrive menu, i think it is great. but, as with everything there is a bit of a learning curve.

New to the e60, but for the most part it works. In fact my only gripe is having to set the dash vent temperature via the i-drive (4 actions, possibly 5), as opposed to moving the knurled wheel in between the vents in the e39 - DAFT!

Partially Satisfied...
I do agree that it is sluggish. I noticed that mine is very sluggish especially when starting the car and the Bluetooth is enabled. The system is trying to read my large address book from the phone (or check for changes - I am not sure) and will freeze for about 10-20 seconds.
It would be great if the right screen can have more functionality that it have right now. Sometimes I feel it would be nice to have my Climate settings on the right screen and my Entertainment settings on the left one. this way I can constantly be adjusting the vents and dash temp while being able to change between CD/Changer/Radio.
Another annoying problem
(I may have the dealer check this one out soon), I noticed that about 30% of the time when I move the knob to the left to select the Climate Control, the highlighter moves correctly but something strange happens. Once I immediately press down for selection (while the climate is still highlighted), the output to the screen goes to the "i" menu instead of going to the Climate menu! Very wired...
