And, if you do turn if off, are you doing it because you are concerned about it "burning out" and needing to be replaced?

I would like to ba able sometimes to completely turn it off (and the back light), and if something happens to the system, to turn automatically on.
I prefer sometimes, (when i drive night at long trips) to have only the instument lights on, at the lower possible setting. Even in this setting, the I-Drive light in off position is obtrusive in the eyes.

Regards.

Nick

I have my "diamond" programmable steering wheel button set to shut it off. What I really wish is that the Lawyer screen would go away after 30 days of ownership.

Can't turn it off except the monitor. I never even start my car for a reason analogous to what you say. But, really, I say use it all all the time unless there is a non-breakage reason not too so; BMW fixes things for a long time.

If I turned it off I'd have nothing to do but drive - It would be like driving a normal car. I've been waiting all my driving life for something like Idrive. I always have a map on, vehicle pos. or the computer. I still look at the screen with the sat nav map and think back to when I watched batman with his in-car map of Gotham City and now I have it for real.

Turn it off - Are you mad

I like to have the map displayed, even if I don't necessarily set the navigation function, just so I can for hold-ups.

It would be nice to have a real "off" position rather than an illuminated off, so that you can get the cabin dark on the odd occassion when that is my mood.
