Seems like y'all are thinking that these cleaners/conditioners/sprays are the only option. Doesn't anyone think my idea of buying some bits of newer leather and hiding it under the seats till it runs out of smell is a good idea too? These places that re-cover car seats and furniture have bits that are no good to them due to shape or scratches. I just can't find a bit with a strong enough whiff. Hoped somebody would say something like "what you need is Buffalo leather, that's the strongest smell" and I'd get me a couple of square feet of that. The off-cuts I got last week didn't seem to do any good.
What you need is to start dating biker chicks.

Well, if you want to go the leather under the seat route, I would recommend getting samples from Connolly. They have outfitted high end cars such as Rolls Royce and Ferrari for decades and their leather smells very leathery for years. Have you ever smelled a 1970's Ferrari? It smells very leathery.

Here's the link: http://www.ukhide.co.uk/connolly.html Looks like you can buy samples.

I have used Connolly Hide care for years and years, and it smells like a cow died in my car after each use, so you may want to look at using this product, too. Best leather care product on the market, IMHO. If it's good enough for Rolls Royce and Ferrari, it's good enough for me. http://www.autogeek.net/cohica1.html

Another vote for griots garage leather scent and also their leather care. In the winter I always throw a leather coat in the car. If you get it where the heat blows nearby it will permeate the car.

So have you tried those products?
No, since I don't need that smell.

But my dealer does...
Any dealer, I guess...

You must have used or still using a car freshener. This masked the natural scent of the car especially if you are using it for a long time. It acumulates in the interior filter and the airconditioning evaporator.

I have experience this with my friends E46 bmw when he bought it second hand. We brought it for interior detailing since it was filthy inside and it smells like a hooker. They disassembled the aircon vents, evaporator cover, all parts of the interior was cleansed including the head liner. We were surprised that all the wax from the airfreshener were in the interior filter and some on the evaporator.

After coming out of the detailer it smells like what a brand new bmw again. I don't know if this is applicable to you.
This is the final solution than masking it again with leather scent spray...

Hope this helps. Cheers!

Hello! This thread is hundreds years old, I know, but is there anyone in the other end, if I ask a question about the stinky E46 and it's cleaning process?

Thanks in advance, Soren

Really? A thread whose last post was over eight years ago? In a forum that is not even about your car? Unbelievable!!!
