doesn't really matter whether you get xi or not, or sport pack or not. its all about the tires.
'nuff said.

It is also about where you live and the weather conditions you put yourself into. The best places to be in California when it is snowing are restricted to AWD/4WD vehicles or vehicles with chains. I saw an E39 putting chains on last Friday and based on the weather over the following days in the area, I bet they had them off and back on a couple times.
The advantage of AWD in weather are obvious. Those who don't see it, don't want to see it.

It is all about power to the ground. Tires and the number of drive wheels both contribute.

I agree completely. There's just some areas in this country, NY State for example, that you would go absolutely no where with a rear wheel drive car (great snows or not). Here in NJ, I will think long and hard before I make my next E60 purchase (i or xi)

OK - thanks for all the feedback so far - I think its obvious the xi has a distinct advantage over RWD in snow & ice, although I've survived winters fine with my previous E46 and E39 RWD with snows, although there were certainly days I wished I had AWD.
But how much of the sport package am I missing out on if I opt for the xi? The SP in the xi gets all the goodies except the for the sport suspension / anti-roll system, correct? Is the real SP suspension worth passing up for the AWD, or is the difference negligible in normal driving (or maybe even too harsh for everyday??). Anyone with extensive experience with and without the real SP?
Thanks

To me, the essence of a BMW SP is not shadowline trim and fancy seats, it's suspension, stabilization, and wheels/tires. If you love to drive, and don't live in an area where you repeatedly get beaten on by snow, go with the i.
