The next time you see the light turn red, I want you to accelerate towards that light and then slam on the gas. Repeat that about 20 times and I bet you will start seeing the number go down

The reason is that the fuel management controller is trying to read the fuel level sensor and the current consumption. Think of it like a PID controller; it will overrun a little then under run until it the equation tracks the consumption and fuel level.

Seriously, the thing calculates your range based on the amount of fuel left in the tank and the average fuel flow and speed over the last xx minutes / xx miles (don't know the exact figures).

Yea it tends to jump up and down due to driving style. I had mine jump up by 50km once because I was driving on the highway using cruise control.
