This is a common feature on European cars because they have to park often on very narrow streets and leaving the street-side marker lights on helps to avoid getting 'rubbed' by passing cars.

The feature that only half of the parking lights are use save the battery!
There's a lot of cars (and MC's) speeding way over 300 km/h in the nighttime.
And this happens every night in Germany!

It happened to me about 2 weeks ago. Good thing i was able to figured out that it was . I was exactly what you explained. After I realized what it was, i started to play with the left and right..until i was pretty sure it is an option.
