I am one month into my 545 lease, and I'm already trying to decide what my next car will be: 550, M5, or 750. One question: does the SMG have a fully automatic mode? In other words, can you drive it without shifting?

I know how you feel...this will be my fourth 5 Series.
The 645 SMG has a "Drive Mode", in which it will behave somewhat like an automatic (i.e., shifting automatically according to a preset program without driver intervention). This isn't a replacement for a true automatic, but it does act like one.

Welcome to BMW. Glad you are happy. Trust me... the car is a drug. Once you own one and you won''t want to drive anything else. I know I am hooked. Go with the M5!
I don't have SMG but I think the answer to your question is yes, there is an auto mode. I am sure others with it will add their comments.

Congrats das! I just noticed you have your new car on order!!
A little wedding present to yourself maybe??
When is it due??

Sorry about that little diversion...
As far as the SMG, yes, it has an automatic mode but don't read too much into that. If you expect it to work like a "normal" automatic transmission, you'll be disappointed. If you think you're wife will be able to drive it because of the auto mode, she's not going to like it either.
Everything you ever wanted to know about the SMG can be found by clicking here (the SMG FAQ topic) and reading each and every link you find there.

Just saw this thread from das about his new car...whoopsie daisy!
