I didn't say I can't afford it. I have very little in the way of other expenses and own my 2 houses outright. My car is my hobby no matter how much it costs. I was simply tryin to point out how expensive fuel here is and how average wages for this country aren't as high as some of you think.

Lol I think I'll pass on the micra! My mate actually sold his very nice e90 325 coupe msport and replaced it with a 1990 micra! For a good reason though, to release some money to open his own pharmacy. Guess a short term sacrifice cos in a few years time it'll be a Ferrari he rolls in the lucky b*d!

....but as a pal from NYC who visited recently pointed out, we get free healthcare, free prescriptions, free trips to the doctor and cheap NHS dentists which make it feel okay i reckon

My calculation was based on the US gallon which is 4.54 litres to the gallon so I am paying $93.0 a gallon.

Also in regards to prescriptions, in England we have to pay £7.20 for it, Northen Ireland, Scotland and Wales its free. I have to pay for dental treatment as well. It might be NHS but i still have to pay.

Yeah. I get free helathcare but I pay £200 a month national insurance to the government and I dont think american helathcare insurances cost that much.... Also i try to avoid hospitals as much as I can!!

Nevrev is absolutely right. Nothin we get is "free" we just have to pay for it through compulsory insurance that the government takes out our salaries. We would be cheaper per month takin out private healthcare such as bupa but even then we still have to pay national insurance.

Sorry about offtopic, but how much do you guys pay taxes out of your income?

My incomes are average, and I pay 25,5%. Then there's other regular outcomes too of course.

The UK gallon is 4.54 liters to the gallon - the US gallon is actually 3.78 liters to the gallon.

US health insurance is easily more than GBP200 per month. We also have Medicare taxes which are income based but can easily be more then your NI contributions. Mine is worse than most as I am a Partner at a major global consulting firm and for tax purposes am treated as self employed and not as a W2 employee. This means I have the pleasure of self-funding the employer contributions in addition to what I would have paid as an employee.
