Is the service indicator telling you it is low or do you just check it often to know?
Take it to the dealer evertime it is low and let them add oil for free. They will eventually recognize something is abnormal.

Seems as if u have a drinker there. You sure there is no leak?
I had a 520i with the M54 engine (2172cc) and covered 8000Kms before changing to a 523i.
It needed a top-up at about 7500Kms. Dealers workshop topped it and didn't charge me. Not sure how much he put in but it was certainly less than a full litre. Guy in the garage did say that when they are new they use a little more than average. So it looks like the M54's like a wee sip of oil.
However, yours seems to be slurping it like a drunk who has been locked in a brewery.
Unfortunately, thats all I can tell you.

Virtually none on my 545i. I change my oil at 7500 miles (in between the dealer 15k) and do not have to add oil during this period. During break-in, I maybe added 1 quart total during the 15k.
I was extremely easy on my engine during the break-in period (varying RPM's, ramped up slowly...).
On most cars, they say 1 quart in 2000 miles is normal. However, on the new engines, it seems 1 quart in 7500 miles is more of the norm.
I would not be pleased with your oil consumption - good luck.

Thanks vnod. Come on guys I need more answers to support my claim against BMW. Just a YES or a NO will do it.
How does one know if the oil is low? Do you get an alert? The car does not have a dip stick, or at least I couldn't find one under the hood

Please don't neglect this post. I need an answer from every member with YES or NO on my following question, and I am going to use your answers in my claim against BMW Egypt.
Did any user of an E60 on this site experience engine oil consumption of 1 liter of oil (1 quart) every 2900 Km (1800 miles) in their cars?
I am facing a big problem with BMW Egypt. My car is still drinking oil.
My car drinked 1 liter of oil at 2900, 5900, 8800, 11700 Km. This means that on average my 520i drinks 1 liter every 2900 km. Honestly I find this very unacceptable, especially from a reputable company like BMW.
BMW Egypt are claiming that this is normal in their new engines due to the fact that the cylinder block and rings are made of what they call NicaSilica. This is a mixture between Nickel and Silicon. They say that due to the hardness of this material, huge friction forces occur in the run in period which causes high oil consumption. They are saying that there is nothing wrong with my car
.
I find this utterly inconvincing
.
If the answer is yes please provide me with your oil consumption figures .
Thanks in advance.

I don't care what BMW techs say, the rate of your oil consumption is not normal.
Even the worst of the E39 M5s (which were notorious for being thirsty little bastards) never consumed that much oil that quickly.
Excessive oil consumption (like yours) is generally a sign that the engine bearings and rings did not seat properly.

Thanks so far for all the replies.
To answer some of your questions:
1. I know that my car is consuming oil because there is a warning that appears on the iDrive screen saying that I should top up with 1 litre of oil.
2. I don't see a leakage in my engine or below it. The BMW engineers can't see anything as well.
3. Please keep posting, I need your replies. Just a YES or NO will do.
