I know that I am in the vast minority here when I say that I miss my runflats. The other day I was driving on Route 80 in Parsippany, NJ when I hit a monster pothole that took out my left front & rear tires. I had to sit for over an hour and wait for a flatbed, then head over to the dealer to have them replaced. If I would have been in my '06 550 with runflats, the sidewalls probably would have buckled and needed to be replaced but I still would have been able to drive. Matter of fact, I had 9 tires replaced in my last car but was able to drive to the dealer every time to have them replaced. The money isn't an issue because I always buy wheel/tire insurance. It's the inconvenience that's the real problem.

 

Sorry to hear about this, but now you have a good chance to change back to RF's JeffNNJ.

But if you would have had the standard 17" 225/50 tires nothing would have happened.

If that would happen in Finland, one should take a cell cam pic of the pot hole, and then the county
or the state (depending on who is responsible for the road) would pay for the damages.

Sorry to hear about your plight, however you're exactly right. With runflats you could continue driving without the inconvenience of having to wait, stranded, until help arrived. My runflat picked up a nail and I drove the car for 2 days before I got around to repairing it. The repair cost $10, yes, a grand total of $10, I just kept inflating the tire until I was able to repair it. To all the drivers who tossed their runflats I simply shake my head and think........

 

dont think you can say that fella, who knows if the run flats would have held up? thats just supasition, sometimes a softer sidewall can ride over/cussion the impact, where a hard tyre wall (runflats).

no tyre is ment to survive a hard pot hole impact, they can sometimes distroy alloys as well
swap back if you miss them

i have 4 you can have for nothing.....i hate them that much.
only the army and the police should have run flats....oh, and some rappers.

 

Sorry to hear about your problem but RFT are not always the answer. Last year on Christmax Eve I hit a deep pot hole in Pa. with RFT and I thought like you about RFT, I kept going at about 35 mph for 15 to 20 miles and heard a loud flopping noise, pulled over and call road side assistence to change my RFT, after 45 minutes they got there and pui on the donut. I will say this the RFT did save me the coat of a new rim but I couldn't continue on mt journey with the RFT the way it was Good luck

Sorry to hear about that, man. Certainly there are pros and cons to both versions, but it appears that it is damn if you do, damn if you dont. I guess that I must be the luckiest man in the world. Living in pothole territoty, I have never experienced a flat due to potholes, in over 30 years. I have experienced only two flats in my whole life, both due to nails, once on the road an the other time in my driveway. Lucky, lucky, lucky. Good luck.

I know that 99% of the people will support the opposite, but I like my runflat.
They saved my ass once and on 17 inches 225/50 they ride OK. Agree they do not provide the best ride ever, but frankly speaking sufficient for daily drive and safe at high speed.
And the ones I used do not sound that noisy. With UK road and there many pothole, I gave up keeping low profile tires on larger wheels... A waste of money and patience and my back did not enjoy stiff ride...And with some negotiating my French BMW dealer (yes I drive on both sides of the channel) gave me real good price for runflat (good year NCT5). 4 for the price of 3. You should negotiate the price.
