I humbly disagree regarding the additional dollars for the 4.8, an upgraded version of the car you have been driving is about $10,000 depending on how equipted. I have owned a 3.0 and a 4.8 and the more powerful car is great, must be ordered with sports package like most BMW's. We love ours.
He's comparing the 3.0 X5 to the CX-9, not the 4.8 X5. The base X5 3.0 starts at about 15K more than the base CX-9.

I do agree with you that the X5 4.8 is a very different animal to the 3.0.

Haven't driven the Mazda, but we own an E60 540 LCI and an E70 X5 4.8. I take the X5 for work out on a site sometimes and we use it for the family car on weekends. The 540 is my daily driver when I'm in a suit. I love having such varied driving experiences, depending on both mood and purpose, yet still with identical comforts (spec'd the same).

The X5 has a great driving position, power, layout of features etc but where it really falls down is in the air conditioning. We get 40 degree days sometimes for 10-12 days in succession, and the X5 rear vents take over 50% of the total output. If you turn it off, the kids cook, turn it on - it needs to be up on full to stay anywhere near cool and the roar is deafening.

Ride is pretty harsh with he RFT's, but that is offset by the comfort seats somewhat. Sounds great but falls in a bit of a hole mid range.

On a side note, a friend of mine has a Porsche Cayenne for himself and just got a new Toyota Landcruiser for the wife (and 5 boys). We took it for a spin and I have to say I was surprised at the number of copied features from BMW (even the Start button) however the ride for a big heavy vehicle left our BMW begging....

Cheers
