It is the 3.0L engine. The first day or 2 I thought..'wow, this thing is kinda nice'. The panoramic sunroof, the backup cam, the layout inside.. but the novelty has worn off. I would hate (maybe thats a bit strong) to drive this thing everyday. The engine seems underpowered for the weight. I was not expecting sports car acceleration, but I think my wife's Mazda CX-9 is faster off the line than the X5. No question the X5 is nicer inside and out than a CX-9, but I would have a hard time justifying the $20+K premium for the X5 over the CX-9. Needless to say, my wife was happy to hear me say that. What are other's thoughts about the X5?

The CX-9 is just a great, great car. Personally, I think it's the best (and best looking) of the crossovers by a mile and it's the 2008 Motor Trend SUV of the Year. It doesn't have the cachet of the X5 3.0, no question, but in other respects it's just as capable, just as much utility (maybe more, as it's bigger and the third row is the biggest in the segment) and it's an absolute steal for what you get.

Without the V8 the X5 is underwhelming for sure , with it , it's a beast !!

I also had an X5 3.0 loaner for about 6 days recently. I too thought the camera was cool, the sunroof was really cool, and the all of that. Like you, I couldn't believe that it stickered for $55k. That is a lot of $$ for what you get in the 3.0 version. there also isn't much storage space in the back. I parked it next to my wife's Volvo xc70, and measured the cargo area, and her wagon has 4 inches of more depth than the X5, and is about an inch wider in the back. The cargo area obviously is a couple inches taller in the X5.
My wife drove it a couple times, however, and she really liked it. She is talking about getting one now when the lease is up on her Volvo. I liked it better than her Volvo, but I would never give up my 545 for it.

Handling: very good. Still, it's a heavy car and you can feel that when cornering hard. In "sport" suspension, the ride is a bit more harsh but handles better.
Acceleration: it's kind of sluggish in "D" mode. However, when you switch to "DS" it's a different animal. The best way to describe it is DS = sprint booster . It also helps that we do not have third row seat (200 lbs lighter).
If I have my way, I would get the 535XiT with Dinan software but my wife refuses to drive a station wagon.
