The May 2006 issue of Bimmer Magazine has a chat with Tom Purves, CEO BMW NA.
Bimmer: What do your customers complain about?
Purves: The thing that causes the greatest customer disatisfaction according to the market research, and the thing that I can understand that we have tremendous diffuculty resolving, believe it or not - the cup holders. I'm not being facetious about this: It is the number one customer complaint about our cars.
He goes on to explain how it is difficult to place cupholders when you design a car for manual transmissions. What is more, he explains that Americans need to get over the fact that BMWs have a European orientaion. "If you're doing 150 mph, you're certainly not drinking hot coffee."

My Ride: 2006 550i, Black/Black, every option except HUD
Never cared for cupholders. Didn't have them in my very first car a Lotus Cortina, and haven't needed them since. IMHO, cupholders are for Limo's and SUV's.

can't believe it - BMW dares to go for the controversial Bangle design, builds a computer on wheels and invests millions into improved engines just to be left standing in the freezing rain moaning about N.American customers having problems with cupholders ...
Thought these cars were supposed to be the ultimate driving machines

What they really need then is a sealed container for your favorite beverage with a clear flexible tube that you keep in your mouth while you drive. When you want a drink you just suck some out. You could even eat guacamole like this, or salsa. Then they would have to design a bowl that will keep the chips from falling out when you hit the brakes going 150 mph. The sealed unit could be kept in the trunk with the 10 foot tube running thru the back seats. Ok im taking out a patent on this idea.
