Sometimes my I-Drive boots up instantly, as soon as I start the car. The screen is up, the bluetooth is connected and I-Drive is fully functional, all instantly. Other times it can take up to a minute for I-Drive to boot up. Does anyone have the same experience with this? Does anyone know why this occurs? There seems to be no rhyme or reason to when it boots instanty and when it takes a minute. After sitting in the garage overnight it's just as likely to boot instantly as it is to take a minute.

Yes, the same here. That's normal.
The car falls into a sleep mode. So, coming out of the sleep mode it takes longer to boot the system.
Sometimes while at sleep, the systems get checked, so the system is not at a full sleep anymore, therefore the booting sequence doesn't need to go all the way.

In order for all i-Drive function work when you start the car, unlock car from a distance or wake your car up using unlock button on your remote. It takes roughly 30sec to boot up from sleep mode.

Yep, 60 seconds is too long. But I am sure it doesn't take 60 seconds, you just feel as if it was 60 seconds.

Yes, the deft way to deal with I-drive. I lock my door everytime just to do this.

I can't swear to this, but I sense that it takes longer to "boot" when there is an mp3 cd in the drive. One day I'll do a test with timings.

Cheers.

it is annoying though..
I have to back up a narrow alley when I leave home, and it takes forever before I get a screen with the park distance control images.
my car has keyless entry, so it is only then kissed to life when I touch the doorhandle..

If that's the case, go with back-up cam.

Do you have experience with a back-up cam? I am considering that option and would like to hear from anyone who has installed this "after the fact".

P.S.: Is it just me or is it mostly 550 owners who complain about slow iDrive boot-up?

OTOH, the audio alarm provided by PDC is independent of iDrive.

Re: Keyless entry... Is it the case that there is NO remote control door opening alternative?
