I am having a similar problem with my 535d but my screen fades to white, then cuts off, then "BMW comes on then back to white, I switch off for ten minutes and it works fine.
I think it may be related to the damp/cold conditions. but if any one knows a fix I would be grateful to them for keeping me out of the stealers grasping hands.
