I have a 2004 also, mine had a software upgrade recently to enable my ipod kit. If you need an upgrade then go for it otherwise it can be risky, do a search on this forum some people have had problems. You should check your version first though through the hidden idrive menu, maybe it is already more up to date?
how do you do that ?

Lastly I should mention that the best way to go but slightly more expensive is the gateway 500, but, if you dont want to splash the cash and you have an ipod then the oem kit is good enough. BMW kit ?165+vat SW update ?80+vat. GW500 is around ?350 + SW update ?80+vat. The dealer needs to activate the cd changer function and mp3, they may not be happy doing this if you fit the Gateway 500.
