1) Open the bonnet
2) with a little mirror and a torch, try to find the long shiny rod that moves the flaps on the right side (when facing the car on front of it) of the engine. It locates under the intake manifold so it might be a bit difficult to see, but if you can find the rod, then you have the swirl flaps.
Here you can see the shiny rod you have to search for:
And here you can see where it locates. Under that plastic intake manifold of course:

Thanks Anzafin i will have a look for that. I have read your post about removal of the swirl flaps and was wondering if you knew if the proceedure was basically the same for my 4 cylinder 2.0d thanks again.

Got mine removed today. Now I can sleep more easily ! I was told mine were the modified swirl flaps so I wonder if failure was less likely. Also had the oil/air separator changed at the same time. Now I can forget about the swirl flap issue. Didn't notice any change in the car after the swirl flaps were removed. I guess worth doing just for the peace of mind.

i've just taken out the swirl flaps and put blanking plates in and tried to clean the egr and inlet manifold as best i can with carb cleaner, put everything back together and the engine management light is on and idrive is saying increased emissions. Do you have any idea what i might have done wrong. thanks
Check also the electric plug on the EGR valve that it is pushed in correctly. Also check all other plugs and tubes too.
