As some may know. I have an 04 GT3 and do a lot of track work with it. The 550 is my first sports sedan, and after two months I never get in the GT3 anymore. This car is super. Its fast as shit, and handles like a dream. Has good brakes (one area I'd like to see improved) and is a sleeper. I toased a mustang Cobra on the way home from work tonight.......Now if it we not from 75 mph up, I doubt it would have happened. But as I looked down at the speedo......I thought, OH MY...I'm going pretty damn fast.......and the Stang was a couple cars back.

Anyway, I'm sleepy, just wanted to share the experience....

550 is definitely a very fast sedan, and comfortable and roomy for daily use. But I don't think it can ever be faster or handle better than a GT3. Can you elaborate more on your comparison of the two cars? Thanks.

Yeah its damn fast.. This is just MY feeling when i test drove the 550i and then i test drove the M5 without the power button on.. Both the cars felt the same. I even said to the SA " 550 feels just as fast as the M5" Then he told me about the Power button.. After that the M5 was a whole different animal. The 550 is a badass car.

Sleeper: That's been the operative word for me for 20 years of these cars. Low profile wins everytime in my book. Heck, it took my insurance carrier 2 years to catch the different "WBAD" (tee hee) VIN designation on my 535iS and bill me at the High Performance rate.

Only the truly observant stranger will pick up on the stick shift as an oddity in such a luxurious car (Well, and those absurdly wide rear tires if you are behind it). I just shrug it off and say it's "just your average 155mph family sedan..."

Cheers,
Ray Hull

PS: And speaking of insurance, you don't want to know what an M5 would cost you....

my 545 feels like jello compared to my porsche boxster.

over long interstate cruises, i'd probably rather take the e60. but for pure fun, involvement, feel of the road, etc....it can't compare to my porsche at all.

I love my 550i, it truely feels great, and you are right about the insurance. When deleted my 2002 325xi from my insurance, my agent said "your rates will go up $84". I said "per month?", and she saidn "no, per year". Can you believe it, only $84 more per year!

Had a similar experience - when I switched from my G35 Coupe to the 545 the difference in premium was under $100 per year. I was expecting to get royally stiffed on the changeover to the 545 and was amazed that the premium was about the same as before.

Sedans are usually cheaper to insure than coupes, that's why there was a minimal increase in premium even though your 545i cost about twice as much as the G35 coupe. If you had gotten a 6 series, I think your premium would have increased drastically.
