In the good old days, cancel used to be pull, resume used to be push...
push - resume/accelerate
pull - decelerate
up/down - off
Going from memory of the E36/7 M Roadster and E34, E28, etc. The E39 and E53 had the horrible buttons on the wheel.

I don't use it much but when I do I really like it. Drove 1200 miles last weekend and really came to love the 5 mph increments. Such a great car for long distance trips.

It is all about getting used to the controls.
I actually got used to it being on the left side.
After signaling my lane change (left hand action). I just move my pinky to push it 2 notches, all the time my right hand is grabbing the wheel. The car will slide into speed automatically when my lane change completes. Just like it has a mind of its own, going fast but not the punching acceleration kind of fast, very comfortably. I know exactly at 3 seconds I am doing 130 kph, which is very predictable and speedier than most traffic around.
I also like the up/down cancelling feature, that little touch brings me back to speed limit (just in case).
Although at first i do clean my windshield times too many.

push: resume
pull: cancel (off)
up: set/accelerate
down: set/decelerate
(very much like M-B except that the resume & off are flipped)
Also, I agree that the E39 steering wheel buttons were a step backwards...

The Up/Down to cancel seems to make sense if you do confuse it with the indicator. You do not want to accelerate by 5mph when getting ready to change lanes!

Don't forget that now it's possible to accidentally activate the turn signals instead of cancelling the cruise -- that could be just as dangerous as the other scenario!

It's been some time since I dusted of my E30 M3 and had any "stick time" but I seem to remember that it was:
push: resume
pull: cancel (off)
up: set/accelerate
down: set/decelerate
(very much like M-B except that the resume & off are flipped)

hmm... okay... you might be right. I'll have to see if I can find my old manuals.
Either way... I like it better than the E39/E53's.

Right, which is why they probably did it that way. The question still remains...Why did they move it to the same side as the turn signal stalk in the first place?

Its just one of those things like why the wipers on EU cars are the wrong way round!
Also its not just the indicators, its the full beams too - now thats one thing that is dangerous to oncomming cars at night!

Maybe I just need to RTFM.
