My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets. First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
Thumbs down

Hey all,
Been a while since I was on here, but that's probably good. My 04 545 Sport 6-speed has now quietly slid out of warranty (time; only 43K miles) and I had something of an emergency this week. Getting on the Interstate to work, my Active Steering Failure (with red icon showing lop-sided car) warning came on. (This has happened in cold weather before, even though it was about 40F). So, I drove on and when I got off, about 9 miles later, I shut it down at the stoplight, restarted and the code reappeared.

When I pulled into the lot, I could hear the pump groaning, so I parked it and called the dealer. They recommended towing. When the tow came, that's when I discovered a mist of oil all over the rear end; even though no oil was showing under the hood.

They recommended replacing BOTH steering hydraulic lines, ($650) and today, I learned that the one I really need is BACK-ORDERED.

Has anyone else had hydraulic line troubles? Is this an age-related item on early Active Steering 545 sports? I am suspicious of the back-order problem as being indicative for others...Hope I'm wrong for your sake.

depending how long it will take to get a hose, maybe a local hydraulic shop can make a new hose.

I have found over the years that local hydraulic shops can make and sell a new hose for much less than any dealer.

Ray - I've been a prowler on the forums a while and have a 545i as well. The hydraulic problems you describe are not common. Seems as if your lines may have aged quicker than usual. I don't see this as part of a systemic issue.
