I've posted my speedo shot before but I wanted to discuss what folks thought about our speedo/HUD readings.

While in Germany, I had several opportunities to floor it.

Each time, the max I could do according to the HUD was 152 mph. At that speed, I didn't try to stare at my speedo too much but my co-pilot was able to snap a pic and it looks to match up decently with the HUD.

I heard from someone that the specs on a new 330 show a top speed of 149 mph or 240 kph. 155 mph is 250 kph. I was thinking that BMW's typically overzealous speedo readings might spit out 152 instead of 149.

Do we know what the governed top-speed on a 545i is? I have SMG and it was in 6th gear and shows 5k rpm. Someone with the gear ratios might be able to figure out the true speed as well.

Laters! Nothing but for this 2005 545i...now the waiting is killing me to see my car again stateside....

I think the limiter is set to 155mph (or not more than 156mph.)

Keep in mind that BMWs have an error built-in to the speedo that's some percentage of the actual speed. The speedo is always reading higher than the actual...

Dang, that is a good clear photo. No way you could get that here in the US with our roads.

FWIW, mine only read 152 on HUD also, but did not look at the speedo.

well, if the limiter is set to 155 and the speedo reads high, then why can he only get to 152?

A magazine called Autocar tested the deresticted 530d and restricted 535d round the same banked circuit and got 157mph and 152mph respectively. They say the lower speed for the faster 535d is down to the inaccuracy of the firms restriction system. Funny how they got 152mph as well!

Interesting. While in Germany last week, I hit 255 km/h (158 mph) on my HUD (Canadian spec 545i) . What a feeling.

The scarriest thing was that when I pressed the accelerator further at that speed, I was pushed back in the seat and the car was still accelerating. This is incredible.

Drove a dealer 535d a few weeks ago, and I have to agree that it is scary how effortlessly these E60's get to 150+mph, and handle such a massive speed so gracefully. I was stunned!

Years ago, getting from 100-140mph was a triumph of courage over time/distance, in these E60's it feels as though you're getting from 70-90mph.

Truly amazing!

1850 kms on the odometer when I tried it. This is pretty close to 2000 Kms.

Well road conditions and wind play a huge factor at those speeds in my opinion.....maybe on the track one would get better readings in a safe environment
