I was sceptical at first and thought it was a bit of gimmick, but now I really like it. You get used to it being there and miss it when you're in other cars. Borrowed a touring the other day when mine was in for repairs and it was strange not to have it! Guess if my 5 its ever replaced I will have to have it on the next one!!

Especially good in areas where speed cameras are everywhere here in the UK.

I would order it if I were you but see if you can demo it first.

I took HUD to my car just for curiosity. After testing it, I was really surprised how useful this feature is. Combined with nav, there's no other installation on the market today that works equally well in autonav. I will never give it away... please see my Youtube for BMW HUD videos http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user...ko33540&p=r

I love it as well. I first had a HUD on a 98 Pontiac Grand Prix. The Pontiac HUD actually had more info, including radio information and turn signals, though there was no Nav back then. I do wish BMW would add rpms to the HUD for us manual drivers.

Mine is on all the time. Without NAV, HUD would be an expensive toy.

Agree, but I think NAV is required in order to get HUD (at least in U.S.)

In any case, I can't go back - HUD is a "must have" on my next car.

Yup, it's a must-have. You won't want to drive any car without it after you have it.

Looking at prices for used 2006 M5s, beasts with HUD command $3-4k more than those without it ... so it's probably one of those rare options that will pay for itself upon resale.

My 1992 240sx has HUD but only displays MPH. Its about time more cars started to use this old technology

I wouldn't buy a 5 without HUD now. it was a huge reason for me wanting a BMW in the first place . Initially it seems disappointing but once you've had it a few weeks ,you realise its worth.

I just wish it had more info eg RPMs,which gear your in etc. Then again if you have too much info on screen I imagine it can become distracting....

Having just recently spec'd my 5 series, I initially went without the HUD. I thought it was neat, but maybe somewhat of a gimmick. Also, I thought just over ?900 to have the speed and nav instructions in front of my face was a lot considering they were already in front of my face?!

That said, when I took the car for a test drive the demo car had the HUD fitted, and even though I only observed its use for 20 minutes and only with the road speed indicated, I couldn't believe how useful it was to have the information projected out in front of you rather than having to take your eyes off the road (for however short a time) to check your speed or nav instructions. The information is totally unobtrusive and makes for a very good safety feature.

Needless to say, I've added it to my options list

I love the HUD as well - very safe while following the nav instructions and correllating the info on the road. Speed indication is pretty useful as well, a gentle reminder how fast the numbers can pile up...
