Hey,
I noticed that the new 325i has 218 hp and the 330i has 258 hp. Will this hp change affect the 5 series? IF so, will it have to happen to a 2006 5 series... or will they just put in new engines in the 2005 5 series ("2005.5 5 series").

Also, since these are new engines... will there be reliability concerns?
Thanks

There are some new inline-sixes in the works for the 5-series but I don't remember seeing anything concrete on the availability dates.

As far as reliability, I think there's no reason to worry. Engine building is one of BMW's specialties. They clearly know how to build a wonderful, reliable, engine...

I heard the 3 series is coming around March 2005 .. so I hope this new engine will be part of the 5 series.. it'll help save money so i dont have to get the 530i for all that power :-D

Hell yeah.. talk about bang for your buck, i previously found the 184hp for $41 grand to be waaaaaay too much, but now this hp increase sounds sweet.

I'm ordering this summer , gonna do EuroDelivery .. so i hope they have this engine by then, or imgetting the 530i

Another thing to keep in mind -- BMW engines tend to be relatively low on horsepower (compared to other cars) but they make up for it with torque. You can never assume that just because a car has more horsepower than a BMW, it has more power or is faster.

I'm sure many of us here will agree that until you experience the pull of a BMW engine, you'll have a hard time understanding this concept.

the new 3.0 engine, code name R6 will go into the 530i some time next year. It will have 258bhp and it was introduced in the 630i in September. It will next go into the E90 330i and then the 530i. Im waiting for it along with the M-Sport pkg in the US, probably a MY06 build

Additionally, BMW measures BHP where the rear rubber meets the road. Many manufacturers measure it at the flywheel. This can translate to as much as 15-20 BHP that is consumed by the drivetrain.

If I were you, i will wait until the 2nd year for the new 3. It has new engine..that worries me a lot. In 5, there are less mechanical problems, majority is software. but in new 3 with new engine, they dont know what will happen in the daily use, I dont want to receive a lot of recall due to mechanical problems. but Im sure it will be a great engine though...

just my opinion...
