How to test if Oil Level Sensor is working fine?
Hello Guys,
As it starts getting freezing here, my oil level sensor seems to show some funky signs. I have 2006-2007 E60 with N52 engine, and for the last couple of weeks I am getting some funky readings from iDrive regarding oil level. A little over a week ago, all of a sudden it gave me low oil warning (checked on the iDrive, and it showed very low level). Then, next time I took it out, it showed full oil. And now, its somewhere in the middle. In case useful, I usually take out the car once/ twice a week, however; I have driven it up to 20 miles/ 35 mins and the reading stays the same.
Another thing I noticed is that in the past, iDrive would only show oil level after engine would warm up. However, now, it shows the oil level pretty much immediately after I start driving.
I was wondering if there is an easy way to check/ make sure oil level sensor is working properly. Also, if there is another way to check oil level in the car. Dont really want to get my engine seized .
While browsing through threads, I came across the reason below as well.. kind of makes sense

I have about 5500 miles on this oil, and close to one year. Changing oil might help as well. However, not trusting the gauge, establishing correct oil level wont be fun..
Thanks again for your help and support.

Replace the oil and put 7 qts in. That way you know it is full and go from there. it takes about 10 mins for that. Its time to change the oil anyway if its close to a year. How many miles do you have on the car?
