Sorry to bump an old thread, but can you put the key in, start the car and without shutting off the engine, you just take the key out instantly ? possible ?

Nope. This is not possible. The car locks the key in the ignition until the car engine is off. The only way to use this trick is effectively starting up the engine twice (which is why it's a complete faff to use on a regular basis). I use it during the winter months to warm up the an unattended car while having the doors locked (can only be done with the key out of ignition). However, to do this on a regular basis in case you get car jacked is crazy.

I personally think it would be a much better implementation if BMW allowed you to insert the key and take it out again which provides the authentication, and then have a 10 or 20 second window to start the car without the key in the ignition. This gives the same behaviour without having to fire up the engine twice. It also makes it much less of a faff and more likely to be used on a regular basis.

These new types of keys probably rely on the car sensing the correct immobiliser chip, to allow startup, so if you hold it near the key slot and simulate a key being inserted (pushing the switch inside), it'll probably start. (and also unlock the steering lock...)

I have another trick that I originally discovered in my Saab 93. You can start the car with the key in the ignition and then when you park the car hit the lock button to lock all the doors, release the little emergency door key from the key fob, get out the driver door and then re-lock the driver's door from the outside. I use this all the time during the hottest summer days and during the winter here in New England. Takes about 2 seconds and leaves the car running and locked without having to go through two starts to get the key.
