Took Delivery 10/26/2009: LOADED! E60 M5 Silverstone II/Black, Active Seats, Comfort Ventilated/Heated Seats, HUD, Brushed Aluminum Trim,
Today I discovered that I can start my car with out the key fob. Well, you actually do need the key fob at first, but it can be removed.
My car does not have comfort access.
Here's how you do it.
1.)Put key fob in key slot.
2.)Apply pressure to brake pedal.
3.)Push start/stop button to start car.
4.)Now, turn off your car by pushing the start/stop button.
5.)Take the key out.
6.)Apply pressure to brakes.
7.)Push start/stop button to turn the engine back on.
Just another neat little trick...

Yeah, saw this in the tips section long ago.
I think you have 10 seconds or 20, can't remember, to start the car again by pushing the button. I can't really think of a good reason to do this though.

In the thread link Gene posted, it says that you can do this for security purposes. Just in case you get car jacked, they won't have the keys.

But this implies you go through this procedure every time you drive the car? Sounds like a complete faff. Obviously the first start is like a security check that endures you have the correct key. It would be so much more usable if you only had to insert the key for security, take the key out and then start the car without key. On its current form it is very useless.

I use it to keep the car running during hot or cold weather when warming or cooling the car or running into the store. Having the key out allows you to lock the door with the car running. sonething you cannot do if the key was in the ignition. I do this a few times a week. Very useful
