Yep. The ped rating is what keeps the E60 from scoring five stars. Passengers look good in those crash tests.

Obviously every accident is different, but in that standard test, the beemer came off worse than a car a fraction of the cost. ...
Yes, but BMW's are sold worldwide and therefore don't need to get five stars at EuroNCAP tests. They do get the best scores in other countries, such as the USA.
When a Ped has an accident with a Renault, he can survive it easily, not so when he has the same accident with an E60.
This keeps the E60 from scoring five stars, but honestly, I don't care about the Ped, I care about myself in accidents.

Stars are for passenger and pedestrian safety.

Perhaps a plastic front end is safer for pedestrians hence higher rating.

Yep, I think so.

I think euro ncap treats the ped rating as distinct from the crash rating - most cars get one star for ped, its fairly common for new cars to get a 4-5 star crash rating. I dont think the beemer or (example) renault take into account the ped rating in the five stars - thats purely the cars rating.

The laguna, as well as using plastic for the wings (as do the 6 and the 3) has an alu bonnet.

I think as a prev poster said, the dummy prob got a bruised knee and that knocked a star off. At the end of the day, there doesnt look anything life threateningly different between the two pictures.

At least I hope not - no prizes for whats being traded in for a 520d - 30 months and 62k miles later, its worth 26% of its value new......

cheers

Before I purchased my car, I saw of some pictures of crashed E60s..The structural cage holds up pretty well. It sold me on the safety of the car.

Hmmm...I wonder how good the chassis would hold up in a crash given that its made up of aluminum.
that why I have a towerbar and sway bars, its abit more stiffer in crash not much but better that nothing.

I can't exactly tell for the E60 but as you can see in the pics of the following thread, the E64 is pretty safe (as well for the wife)
