I'm driving a towtruck from time to time and see a lot of wrecks.
I'd NEVER EVER drive a Renault, even thoguh they score 5 stars in the EuroNCAP tests!
All 5 and 6 series that I had to tow were in very good condition, even when crashed on highways at high speeds. They looked much better with their 4 stars than ANY Renault with 5 stars.

But are u taking like for like? Renault in to the same object as the Bimmer at the same speed?

Anyways, I would have thought the more squished it was indicated that the deformable structure was taking and dispersing the energy rather than transferring it in to the passanger cell. If it didn't give way properly that the shock getting through would probably kill you.

I see wrecks almost every day and in detail. I also get the complete story behind it from the cops at the scene...
Trust me, Renault is terrible.

I was involved in a highspeed (+180km/h) accident in a 2000 528 E39. We spun a couple of times, touched a tree and finally landed on the roof. After that accident, were both of us were completly unhurt I have very good faith in BMW's safety (and maybe something higher.. ).. The car protected us perfectly, the most scary thing was how bad it would be if we would have had someone in the backseat, it was almost gone.

You're a tow truck driver and you own a top of the line E60? Damn, I definitely need to quit my job then!

The NCAP rating is not what happens to the car but what injuries passengers and pedestrians are liable to sustain.

There is also a difference between active and passive safeness.

I would say your BMW scores best avoiding the accident while a Volvo tends to focus on passive countermeasures...

Ncap testing crashes cars in a standardised way as an offset frontal impact into a block (as well as side impacts). Wether or not it makes sense, just about every renault released in the last few (since 2001?) years got 5 stars - the five series only managed four. Obviously every accident is different, but in that standard test, the beemer came off worse than a car a fraction of the cost.

Ignore the wheel trim on the renault (didnt want to crash a costly one did they ) and to my eye the wheel hasnt come back as far as the five....

In the UK brochure I have that talks about the front being of alu, it seems to show as a shaded drawing the whole of the frontal section - inferring its all alu..... or there are extra bits its not showing that are steel....

cheers
