As a new owner I was wondering is the 5 a very safe car? I mean when you think of Volvo you think of safety and BMW you think performance. I have always had my wife in Volvo's because she feels safe. I always thought it was a good marketing tool until she got smashed by a suburban several years ago and three volvo's ago and the vehicle did everything they said it would. In looking for crash ratings on the 5 I can't seem to find much. Has anyone else done any research on this issue? I hope I never have to find out, but am interested on how it rates.

2 weeks old today and it is pure driving pleasure, the 5 is simply awesome. As one that looked at 5, gs430, and Acura RL I am so happy I choose the 5.

Hi and welcome. finally, you did it
From my research, about one year ago, I found that E60 was rated 5 out of 5 for passengers and 3 out of 5 for pedestrians (if I can recall correctly)

Hmmm...I wonder how good the chassis would hold up in a crash given that its made up of aluminum.

No, the chassis is not made up of aluminium, you must be thinking at A8. The unsprung weight is aluminium, and also other parts of the body of the car. Bonnet, front wings, etc. Other than that, it's still steel.

now that gives a whole new meaning to the act of taking your hat off indoors....makes running with scissors look pretty normal.

Is E60 safe? This question is regional dependence. If you're in Iraq, it's absolutely unsafe. That's why BMW offers armor and gun rack option.
I think 99.99% owner here don't buy E60 for safe, but for spirited performance. If you want to buy safe car, I'd recommend T-54.
OK. enough for the joke. If you buy BMW, you don't have to worry about safety rating!

The 3 series gets a euro-NCAP 5 stars, but the five only gets four.... thats unusual as most cars nowadays tend to aim and get five. My guess is that its the alu front end. The Ncap test shows the front pretty well squished, whereas the first car to get five stars - the renault laguna - has a fair bit of bonnet area left....

cheers

I will repeat myself. Nothing structural is aluminium.
