my engine seems very strong, it does not smoke when you rev her, it pulls like a train.
i also have a full re-map and every thing is at optimum.
but my 2004 530d auto seems to smoke under hardish accelaration, noiw this is more evident at night when i can see via the rear view mirror (when cars headlights are behind) now i understand that diesel smoke is heaver than air so will be more evident in the glare of headlights.
but,.....do they all smoke? and to what degree?
the car returns over 40mpg, but is up on the milage (125k) very quiet engine fully serviced, with no faults.

The E60 diesel engines shouldn't smoke at all due to the particulate filter. I can run my finger round the rim of the tail pipe and it comes out clean on a four year old car

Sorry for off topic.
But how can your car produce 320 hp ? do you have a dyno print out of this.. ?
Its a 530d running with standard turbo and cat back system, other mods ?
I mean they normally give the car 260-270 hp max so i can't see how it can produce 320 hp without breaking the turbo after a short while

I had the bent exhaust tips, changed it out for a cat-back system...
Turbo Sounds aweseome, and letting off at ~2300rpm, gives me a kind of a "blowoffish" sound... i love it
hehe... "bwuhhrr....."
Mine is remapped with a hard tune, 6g manual.... 320hp... and when i get hard on it... it smokes really bad....
But i LOVE IT![Smile](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/smile.gif)

Down turned pipes means no particulate filter and a little bit of smoke when giving it some and means less restriction so a little more power when mapped. Twin pipes means no smoke, but costly particulate filter to change and restrictive.

My remapped E39 530d did the same. I wonder if it is just because the diesel particles are dense and the headlights pick them up. I followed my car in daylight and there was very little smoke but at night it looked smokey

I wonder why BMW removed the particle filter from the LCI models with bent pipes? Any way we can add that back in?

Well I dont want to worry you but, my 530d was smoking a bit for a couple of months. It gradually was getting worse. Not loads of smoke but you could see it when you accelerated. Anyway, the turbo blew on it. It has all been repaired now and I dont get any smoke out of it what so ever. I hope the same thing is not happening with yours mate. Has the turbo started making a louder noise?
