how much "diesel" smoke is acceptable?

We have a 530dA from 02/2004 without the particulate filter (bended exhuast), and when I make a sudden / fast acceleration after driving very slow for a while, I get a small "puff" of smoke.

no your right, my car has the down turned exhaust tips...does this mean i dont have the particle filter? and could this be a reason for small amount of smoke?

Im not aware of any smoke from mine, the tail pipes are always clean, ( which i thought was very strange for a diesel when i first aquired the car) it has particle regen. Has just gone thru annual mot and the emmisions were near zero, wouldnt even register on the machine and the engines 96k miles. Mine feels a little sluggish during the regen process too. Im 35-40 mpg

Smoke from a pre-particulate filer E60 is not a cause for concern, as long as it doesn't do it all the time.
What happens is that all the time you're pootling along, the soot particles stay in the exhaust, but when you apply Wellington, the soot gets dislodged and comes out of the back like a smoke screen, and yes, it is more noticeable at night. This smoke disappears quickly as the soot disperses. If you don't want a smoke cloud and you know you are going to give it some, then just drop a gear or two beforehand, thus increasing the revs, but with a small throttle opening. The soot will get dislodged more gently, so you won't get a cloud, then when you put your toe down, you'll zoom off without a "Mondeo Mist" behind you!!
There may be a concern if you do have particulate filters, but the downturned pipes indicate that you don't.
Oddly, I only rarely notice my filters regenerating, and then just a little extgra noise, and no performance loss. Must be my driving style!!

Our E60 was produced two weeks (!) before the particulate filter was introduced
But on the bright side, I don't have to change the filter after 160.000 km's (which I've heard should be quite expensive (~?1.300)).

I had the bent exhaust tips, changed it out for a cat-back system...
Turbo Sounds aweseome, and letting off at ~2300rpm, gives me a kind of a "blowoffish" sound... i love it hehe... "bwuhhrr....."
Mine is remapped with a hard tune, 6g manual.... 320hp... and when i get hard on it... it smokes really bad....

I think there may be differencies between cars how often it does it, but if I drive only in town, the regenerating happens every few hundred kilometers. On the highway it is something between 500-1000kms IMHO.
