my engine seems very strong, it does not smoke when you rev her, it pulls like a train.
i also have a full re-map and every thing is at optimum.

but my 2004 530d auto seems to smoke under hardish accelaration, noiw this is more evident at night when i can see via the rear view mirror (when cars headlights are behind) now i understand that diesel smoke is heaver than air so will be more evident in the glare of headlights.

but,.....do they all smoke? and to what degree?
the car returns over 40mpg, but is up on the milage (125k) very quiet engine fully serviced, with no faults.

I thought the new diesel engines don't smoke anymore like the old diesel engines. If it smokes too much, I would take it to the dealer

Diesels still smoke under certain circumstances (like when the engine gets older and more worn). If there is so much smoke that you can't see what is behind you, then it's time to go get your car checked!

I think it's still quite common with diesel engines. Except that I have never noticed smoke from my 2004 530d.

I wish i was getting near 40mpg! never mind over it in my 530d.
I have noticed mine smoking but only a couple of times in the past 4/5 months so never sworried about it, and it is also mapped.
99% of the time there is no smoke.

You don't have the straight line exhaust tips, right?

We have a 530dA from 02/2004 without the particulate filter (bended exhuast), and when I make a sudden / fast acceleration after driving very slow for a while, I get a small "puff" of smoke.

This has been the case since the car was brand new. 135.000 km's on the clock. The fuel comsumption is still very good (15 km/l) during highway driving.

Glad mine has zero smoke as I have the particulate filter, but it doe's run lumpy for a while as it regenerate's,I can live with that as I got rid of my Golf as it was like a fog machine when flooring it.Mine's a 2005 530d Sport.

+1 on particle filter. I have it too and when it's regenerates the car feels a bit sluggish, but the exhaust sounds are great !
My E60 has done 92000kms now.
