In town. A roads with constant start stops it gets about 23MPG they say the book figure is 26.6 even though book specs are 30.6

On motorway crussing at 70mph I have got 38MPG on a 120 mile journey even though book says 53.3

Now is it me or are these figures way off ??

Thanks
You might want to double check your book figures - they don't seem right for a 2005 525d. In 2005 the 525d was a 2.5l engine and now it is a 3l with lots of efficient dynamics "stuff" on it.

Macsid I have compared it with fills ups and OBC is about spot on or actually about 2-3mpg out i believe but then again I sometimes put my foot down, all i see in town driving is the needle near the 16mpg hmmmmmmm

525d sport sorry those figures were off there website under cars which are 04 54 05 55 reg

rc30 were not alone

look what i found not to old

http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=50046

Funny enough via google not via search on here..

Now ppl with 530 even 535 are getting better is this telling us something about pre LCI and the engine change maybe it was the engine causing this low consumptions hence the change from 2.5 to a stripped down 3l

Plenty of ppl in that thread with 525 with same issues

I think we're seeing the coming-together of a couple of clear observations about the diesels, LCI or otherwise...

1. The diesels are great if you do get to run them at consistent speeds but consumption plummets to petrol-engine neighbourhoods in start-stop traffic. My brim-to-brim computations have swung between an all-time low of 32.9mpg from pottering around town and the car sitting with the engine running while in service, to an all-time high of 42.3mpg after having, of all things, crossed the Alps (Innsbruck - Brenner Pass - Milan) followed by a couple of runs between my hotel on the outskirts of Milan and our office on the outskirts of Monza.

Worthy mention also goes to my 505-mile run from home in Amsterdam to Bad Groenenbach (en-route to Innsbruck), which I did in 6.5 hours (for an average speed of 78mph), and got 38.3mpg. Sounds low but, 410 or so of those miles were on autobahn, about 70% of which was unrestricted, and I had my foot well down. Again, testimony to the diesel's frugality if out on open road. I am certain that, if I were to do an early-morning run with the cruise control set to 130km/h[80mph], I'd get a good 45-46mpg out of the thing.

2. The LCI cars are returning somewhat less than the pre-LCI cars. Part of this is that a lot of the LCI cars are (or were) still being run-in. As they have bedded in, consumption has improved. Part of this may also be to the newer versions of Progman - some folks have reported a fall in economy after getting upgrades.

3. Chipping helps a lot. In general, getting the diesels chipped tends to pay back a better fuel return ... if you can resist the temptation of trying to use all that additional power and torque all the time

4. Regardless of all of the above, my wife can get 3 or 4 mpg more out of the car than I can every time, with no noticeable difference in arrival time.

I think some of us oil-burner owners can get a bit anal about or fuel consumption.
I noticed a big difference coming from an E46 Touring 330d to my 530d, (both Manual's) but I offset this against the fact that the 5er was so much quicker all round.
I don't do anywhere near as many miles as I used to due to a job move, so the consumption doesn't really worry me - I just like the big diesel power and torque.
I can relate to Clinty's run - I used to "commute" from the Midlands to Aberdeen on the M6/M74 etc in the early hours of the morning. We won't mention the M74 on a summers night/morning with nothing else around and finding corners on that road that you didn't know existed at lower speeds!!

I have only had mine over 40mpg for a tankful very occasionally, but the only time I get below 30mpg is when I am towing my caravan at lunatic speeds. I don't do a "normal" daily commute, so most of my mileage isn't stop-start, but I generally get mid 30's. I am still in the testing phase, but I have been trying a diesel additive - purely for its pump lubrication - and seem to be getting around 2mpg better consumption.
I don't log average speed per tankful, just fuel figures and mileage - I don't even check iDrive to see if the figures correlate, as I am old fashioned enough to think that pencil and paper are better than fancy screens!!!

Hey... Just trying to get an idea of what other Tractor owners get on there cars..

Model: 520d Msport
Miles: 645
AVG MPG: 51
AVG Speed:58

After having mine remapped - I gained an extra 90 miles per fill up - with mostly motorway driving.

Costs me AV of ?65 to fill the tank from empty - I average between 600 - 645 with conservative driving and not much stop starting.
This can fall as low as 460 miles with 'spirited driving' and round town journeys.

2004 525d

I can just creep into 40's MPG if reset on motorway driving at sensible speeds (75mph).
In town and stop start journeys it will plummet, 25 mpg is the worst i have seen low to mid 30's typical. Overall i do not expect less than 600 miles per tank.

Average throttle style, ac off, manual..

Hi Matt,
Do you mind me asking who did your remap and what it cost?

If I could aspire to 33.6mpg on my 525D with 80,000 miles on the clock then I would be happy - I struggle to get 32mpg overall.

It's a BMW. Get used to it.

Hi,

Remap by ChippedUK - Cost ?350.00 - they can also read and reset faults and undertake 'live mapping'.

Matt

Just to add to the above

My 2006 525 D SE with 25k on the clock gets at best 30mpg mainly diven 20 -25 miles mixed driving
about 420 miles from a tank its also an auto which hits the figures.

its better on the motorway with a cruise setting I once got 40mpg on run to Manchester

Like you I found this a little poor, so its had the latest engine firmware when I complained to my dealer (was doing 23mpg my M3 used to do that !!)
I also did the air filter myself even though it wasnt due.

leaving the AC off does make 2-3mpg difference ive noticed
my neigbours 530D is actually better MPG possibly driving style or less engine stress

BMW figures are way out for normal use I was expecting the combined figure. There should be a no BS real world MPG test developed !!

My previous 320D was of course radically better (45mpg) as no doubt the 520D will be its the same engine with a heavier car

like me its a choice of live with it, the six is smoother or change the car I think ?
