i have 10k on my 275/35/18 kumhos, and they are shagged. the both have a huge split in them and are down to 2mm. looking for new ones now, but can't decide on replacements, hoping to find some with a very high treadwear rating. thinking about yokohama AVID ENVigor, they have a treadwear of 560. anyone ever tried these?

To cut costs, sure. There's nothing wrong with that. Just make sure you keep them paired together side by side.

Because tire brands and models each have specific handling characteristics my "personal" recommendation is to match brand and model tire both side to side and front to rear.

While having different tires front to rear probably won't make a difference in "normal" driving it may make for some interesting driving in an emergency maneuver whether on dry and certainly on wet or slippery roads.

Just got Conti Extreme Contact DWS's... I do 100 miles per day and hate the idea of having to buy a new set of tires in 6-12 months... can you rotate a staggered setup? I am thinking no... I mean I guess I can switch from one side to another... whats the point?

Of course you cannot rotate staggered tires front to rear. I personally wouldn't rotate tires side to side - and if the tires are unidirectional it's a definite NO.

Obviously not front to rear... I guess my point is due to the camber in the rear on these cars I will be getting a new set of rubber annually... call it maintenance...

YUP ... scheduled BMW maintenance!

Have you ever tried shopping for tires with a tread-life warranty? They might not be the ultra-high performance rubber our cars like but it might help reduce your tire-replacement costs.

My 550i just turned 12k miles and they need to be replaced. They are the ones that come with the car, Continental Sport Contact 2's and after googling them, they have terrible ratings and wear typically between 12-20k...
