I've got a 5 litre emergency jerry can of diesel in the boot. I'm just wondering how long it will last for? I intend to pour it into the car's tank and fill it up with fresh fuel every now and again but just trying to work out how often I should do this.

TIA

You have to make sure that the can is full most of the times specially in cold (freezing ) conditions. Not much happens to diesel unlike petrol.

as it happens diesel turns to a oily greasy substance when its cold making it even harder to burn than normal

Diesel will store in your dry trunk for a good while. The problem occurs in partially filled outside, or underground tanks, where moisture will condense.

Hint: As temperatures drop replace the diesel in your jerry can to take advantage of anti-gelling agents or winter blends that fuel suppliers provide.

the question is, why do you keep emergency fuel with you? do you run out of fuel alot?
plus, running a diesel on empty, sometimes means bleeding the fuel system, so that it starts.

I've never run out of fuel in the 12+ years I've been driving. The word 'emergency' might be a clue as to why I have it
