I bought my car cash. But I won't own it for 7 years.

The longest I ever owned a car was my last car, which was 5 years old and had 105,000 miles on it.

Sue If I had your car there is no way I would keep it. For those of you looking for extended warrantys it pays to shop around to different sources and dealers to get the best price. My milage is low probably less than 7k per yr so I will probably keep it for at least 6-7 years. The only way I'd unload it sooner would be if a lot of repairs are needed or I get an M5.

I started leasing cars in 1990, prior to that I purchased and kept them until they became unreliable or I got the itch. Leasing can get expensive if you choose to end your lease early and roll remaining payments into the next car which I do a lot. I am in agreement with most, I will not keep a car without a warranty. That said, if I were to keep one of my leased cars I would purchase an aftermarket warranty.

my dealer filled me in on an extended warranty that sounded really and is offered directly by BMW. I could see owning the car for more than the current 50k mile warranty if I get that added on.

Yes, the value drops when you drive off the lot-- and that's the biggest drop. It also drops later when the car slips out of warranty. There is a major difference between a car with 49,500 miles and one with 50,001 miles ... much bigger than between 48,500 and 49,000 or 70,000 and 70,500. ...and with a car with as much electronic wizardry, a warranty is even more important. I'm talking high-line cars here. No one cares if a Ford is out of warranty.

No kidding... my point was that if I had ended up with a completely normal vehicle instead of my Satanically possessed vehicle, I still would have most likely only kept it until October of last year.

I know this may sound pitiful to this crowd but I owned my first car for 10 years before ditching it and my second for nearly 12 years before buying my current 5er. It does suck not having new wheels often but not having the car payment and having the extra cash flow is nice.

gmartin, I'm like you, I buy them new and drive them until they need to be replaced ... my newest vechile (next to the 5er on order) is a 1994 (which I'm keeping) and replacing my other car 1989 (16 years old) ... what can I say, got my moneys worth and hope to do the same with my new 5.

I was hoping after 5 years all the problems and software would be fixed and I wouldnt have to worry about them anymore... just the normal wear and tear items...
