How long did it take you guys to get used to Active Steering?

I love it, especially after coming off my parents 3 series and X5. Both of which did not have it, and it just seemed too tiresome to turn the wheel so many times, while AS you dont have to turn it as much or as far. I enjoy it a lot, and makes the car feel more nimble.

I LOVE IT!!!! I have it on both cars and recently drove a friend's 550 that didn't. What a huge difference! I'll never go back.

I test drove a 525i with Active Steering and it is irritating! It feels like it doesn't give me full control of the wheel. AS just keeps on kicking in! I will definitely not get this option!!!
Do you guys honestly love this Active Steering?

Then I ended up buying a 550i that happened to have Active Steering (and HUD, and just about every other option). I thought "oh well, that's the only thing wrong with the car - I will just have to live with it."
I hated it for about 1 month. Then I started getting used to it - how the ratio varies based on speed. Suddenly it started to make sense.
Now, it's one of the most amazing features on the car. The problem is, it makes the steering feel terrible on my other cars. I have a 993 Porsche with a bunch of bushing and suspension upgrades. I thought it had steering feel just about as good as it gets. Now, I can't believe how much I have to turn the Porsche's wheel to get around the corner. Nothing to be done about that.
So, in summary, don't let AS get in the way of buying an otherwise nice car. Unless you have other nice cars, which will suddenly fail to live up to your standards.

In the past, I test drove a 2003 e39 Sport and a 2004 e60 Sport w/AS. I fell in love with the feel of the steering at low and high speeds. I drove the newly purchased e60 home from the BMW Center. It was a 9 hour drive and my first vehicle with AS. I adapted to it within the hour. Switching to and from non-AS vehicles (BMW loaners, three other vehicles in my garage) has not been a problem for me. I prefer AS, if given the choice.

It is definitely noticable the first time to drive an e60 with it. I remember thinking the same thing when I was test driving 545's and 550's. It felt weird and hard to control, especially in the parking lot.
However......now I don't even know it is there and it is sooo smooth. I really notice how refined my driving machine is when I get behind the wheel of my wifes family transporting unit. Almost backed over the garbage cans the other day because I forgot to spin the steering while backing out of the driveway....the same manouver in my car only requires a half spin of the steering wheel!
get it, you will get used to it fast, and then you will miss it when you don't have it
